Fashion in infant clothing is nothing new. Since people first learned how to sew, mothers have been fashioning beautiful lacy, frilly, embroidered clothing for their children. Time has not changed much, except now new parents can purchase pretty baby clothes in the stores instead of fashioning them. There are so many warning and cautions to understand before you bring baby home. Clothing is no different, so are a few things to think about to keep your baby safe and oh so cute in their new outfits.
While frilly, poofy and lacy clothing is so very cute, be careful purchasing clothing with these details. Attachments that dangle might come off and these clothes can put your child’s safety at risk. Pay attention to drawstrings on hoods and waistbands and sewn on decorations that might come off. These may pose a choking hazard. If your child’s jacket does have drawstrings, make sure it is sewn into the hem of the jacket at the mid-point so it cannot pull through. Check each item of clothing before you put them on your child. Give sewn on attachments a gentle tug to make sure they do not come off.
Hand me downs are a great way to save money on baby clothes, but you should do your research before dressing your child in them. Just like with new clothing you should check for drawstrings, buttons or sewn on sequins. Also, make sure that the clothes are not on any manufacturer’s recall list. This can be done quite easily by checking online. Saving a few bucks is not worth your child’s safety.
Fire retardant sleep wear is now being regulated by the Federal government. New sleepers will meet these new standards, while hand me downs most likely will not. Fire retardant clothes are usually either made of polyester or chemically treated cotton. The best way to keep your child safe is to make sure sleepers are form fitting not loose.
