How to Save Money with a Baby

New parents face all sorts of challenges.  Emotionally, physically and financially.  While being a parent does mean sacrificing, you do not need to over spend. Saving money is a  high priority for many new parents, but not at the risk of their or their child’s health and safety.  Here are a few tips to keep from spending money you do not need to.

  1. Coupons are a parent’s best friend!  After a few sleep deprived weeks, clipping coupons is probably the last thing you want to worry about.  Enlist a close friend or grandparent to save coupons for diapers, wipes and toys.  Also, take a few minutes to check store’s weekly fliers for sales.  Many stores will list their sale items for the week online so you can check without even leaving the house.  Check online for coupons that can save you tons of money without wasting time looking through sales ads.
  2. Hand me downs are another great way to save money.  Clothes, bottles, blankets and toys are all items that are often handed down.  Be very careful with cribs, car seats and pack and plays. Safety requirements on these items change over the years.  Check the model numbers against manufacture recall lists to avoid putting your child at risk. Avoid using car seats that have ever been involved in an accident or that are over a few years old.
  3. Stock up before the baby is born.  This works particularly well for items like diapers, blankets and onesies.   If storage space is an issue then try a savings jar.  A few dollars each day will come in handy after the baby is born.
  4. Buy in bulk.  Invest in a membership to a wholesale club.  Large boxes of diapers cost less per diapers than buying smaller packages and mean less trips to the store.  Less trips to the store means saving time, too.  And every new parent can use more time.
