If you are a parent you have probably come across an article or two about the many health risks that dyed, commercial clothing presents. Chances are these articles talked about all the terrible things that can happen like headaches, skin rashes, itching, closed airways and other health risks. While there is an issue with clothing and sensitive people it isn’t really the dyes that is doing it. It is something else.
Dyes have long gotten a bad rep about causing the problems that are being associated with clothing. Experts have recommended that parents switch all clothing to organically dyed clothing and other measures. While all that will be helpful the dyes are not what is causing the problems but instead it is all the finishings that comes with the clothing.
Every item of clothing from children’s to adult has some type of finishing on it. This could be a flame resistant spray, odor absorbing finish, stain resistant finish or a wrinkle free finish. The finish is an artificially made item that can be absorbed by the body and it is stuff like this that is creating the body rashes, headaches and health problems.
So how did dyes get a bad rep? Dyes have been blamed because of the finishing that is used to hold the dyes to the clothing. In order to make sure that all dyes stay on the fabric when the clothing item is made, the manufactures spray a finish on it so that it doesn’t fade away. It is this finishing that the body is reacting to and because of the close association to the dye, the dye gets blamed.
Even though you now know where the problems in clothing come from it still doesn’t change the fact that there are still many dangerous toxins still in the clothing. The only true way to avoid these toxins is to make the switch to an all organic wardrobe.
